Toronto-based Hudbay Minerals ran a full-page April 24 ad in the Arizona Capitol Times, a Phoenix newspaper that covers the state legislature, featuring a lengthy statement signed by Sahuarita Mayor Thomas Murphy.
The ad ran eight days after Save the Scenic Santa Ritas released an investigation revealing that Hudbay failed to notify the town that it had operated five groundwater production wells in 2025.
Hudbay is required to notify the town about groundwater water and replenishment with Central Arizona Project water as part of a 2013 agreement that allows Hudbay to install its primary water pipeline needed to operate the mine along the Santa Rita Road right-of-way through town.
Murphy praised Hudbay for sharing “information openly.”
