A portion of state land has been sold to Hudbay Minerals for its Copper World mine near the Santa Ritas.
Hudbay was the only bidder at the auction held and paid just under $1 million for 160 acres near the mine.
Leading up to the auction, dozens of people, including Tucson City Council members and Pima County supervisors, showed up to protest the sale.
“For years, Pima County has made one thing clear: open pit mining in the Santa Ritas does not align with our values,” said Jennifer Allen, Pima County District 3.
