On April 12, 2025, 300+ residents from the region joined us in Sahuarita to hear the latest updates on Copper World and mobilize as a community.

Primary Concerns:
- Toronto-based Hudbay Minerals will send 40,000 heavy trucks a year carrying explosives and toxic materials through downtown Sahuarita to and from Highway 19. Traffic experts have determined people will likely die from the onslaught of Copper World’s heavy trucks 24 hours a day for at least the next 20 years.
- Copper World plans to pile millions of tons of mining waste within 700 feet of homes and just over a mile from an elementary school in Corona de Tucson. Wind across the waste piles is predicted to blow dust into the community and schools, where children and at-risk adults will breathe it.
- Hudbay refuses to release its truck traffic plan. Government leaders have done nothing.
- Meanwhile, Sahuarita Town Council members pose for photo ops in Hudbay hardhats, but publicly states that they have no comment because the mine is outside of town limits.
- The Green Valley Council avoids the topic, stating it’s a “special interest.”
Next Steps:
- Contact your elected officials and ask them to voice their opposition to this mine! Find letter templates and contact information at scenicsantaritas.org/letters
