Copper World Town Hall Meeting
1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28
Corona Foothills Middle School
16705 S Houghton Rd, Vail, AZ 85641
Hudbay Minerals, owner of Copper World, has left an ugly trail of serious human rights abuses at mines in Canada, Central and South America and poisoned the people of its hometown in Flin Flon, Manitoba, where it operated a highly polluting copper smelter for nearly century.
Now, Hudbay is planning to construct the Copper World mine that will destroy the Santa Rita Mountains, contaminate the air, deplete regional groundwater, threaten rare desert streams that supply potable water to Tucson, and weaken the regional economy.
The Arizona State Land Department has scheduled an April 29 auction of a 160-acre parcel at the request of Hudbay. This parcel, which would be used as a dump for the mine’s toxic waste, is located 1.4 miles from Corona de Tucson’s Copper Ridge Elementary School and even closer to people’s homes.
Find out how Copper World threatens air quality, water quality, public health and safety, and the local economy.
Please join us at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Corona Foothills Middle School for a vigorous discussion about the future of Corona de Tucson and the Santa Rita Mountains.
